Cambridge

I have been exhausted lately. I've been spending a good few hours of my afternoons sleeping, and I've hardly had any energy or enthusiasm to do a lot of things I used to enjoy, such as cooking and (quite obviously) blogging. So I've started making some changes in my life in order to be happier and more relaxed about things. After all, it's hardly as if I have a crap life. I've just gotten myself into a slump, and now it's time to get out of it.

Last Monday, B and I went to Cambridge, a city we've both been to before but which never loses its charm. Going there was a perfect way to relax, especially since we spent a lot of our time lying in the grass by the river. Cambridge is beautiful in the sun! But I don't want to waffle today. I will let my photos speak for themselves.

Here is Cambridge, city of bikes, architecture and ridiculously clever students, for your viewing pleasure:

I love Cambridge!! =D

When we got back we went for a walk around a lake, and made a pledge to go there more often. It's so nice to escape the city and get some fresh air. I don't know about you, but being in nature calms me down and gives me perspective.

We went there again earlier for a run, and now I feel very refreshed.

What do you do to relax?

Hotel Review: London House Hotel, London

A few weeks ago I went to London for some courses. Since last time I did this I wrote a sort-of review of the hotel I stayed in, I thought I'd do the same this time around.

I stayed at a hotel called London House Hotel, which is in central West London - very close to Notting Hill. The nearest tube station is Queensway, with Bayswater tube station about 30 seconds further up the road. The location is perfect for getting around central London, considering Hyde Park, Notting Hill and Paddington are all very close by.

SERVICE

When I arrived at the hotel I was greeted by some very friendly receptionists. Although I was only there for one night I had no issues with the service whatsoever - it was all very efficient and polite. When I checked out, they even asked me if I wanted to leave any luggage with them to pick up later! I didn't need to, but I think this is a really good idea if you aren't leaving the city immediately, and don't want to drag your bags around London for the rest of the day.

THE ROOM

The room I stayed in was a single room. It was fairly small, but had all of the necessary amenities including hairdryer, safe, fridge, thermostat to control the room temperature, complimentary toiletries and coffee/tea, as well as a TV and free wifi. To be honest with you, I don't see the point in a massive hotel room if you are only using it as a place to sleep and get changed. There's nothing wrong with a small hotel room if it is comfortable, clean and has everything you need in it (unless you're claustrophobic or something...). I found this one really cosy. :)

BATHROOM

The bathroom was great as it had under floor heating! You could adjust its temperature, too. When I stayed in this hotel it was a pretty warm day, so I didn't really need it, but I left it on anyway because it felt so nice on the soles of my feet. I'm sure it's appreciated during winter! The shower wasn't all that powerful, but it was nice and hot so I can forgive that. You get complimentary soap, shampoo and shower gel, and there's a heated towel rack. Lovely.

VIEW

The view from my window was not all that thrilling, as it faced the back of a shopping centre or something, and I had to close the curtains when I got changed as I was a little paranoid (?) that people could see me (they were blackout curtains, by the way - another plus). But as I said, unless I am going on a romantic/relaxing holiday and/or spending a lot of time in the hotel, I don't think the view from a hotel window is all that important. The last place I stayed in was fantastic, but had a view of a brick wall. It didn't bother me in the slightest! And plus, in this one I had a nice UK flag to look at.

Once I'd checked in and refreshed myself I had dinner at my lovely friend Will's house. A few too many glasses of vino later, I made my way back to the hotel. Instead of getting off in Queensway I ended up walking from Notting Hill tube station, because I was getting impatient waiting for the train to arrive. It took me around 10 minutes or so. I probably shouldn't have, because it was dark by then and I didn't really know where I was going (I was following the Google maps navigation on my phone), but it was an easy enough route and after 5 minutes or so I reached a lovely stretch of road filled with bustling restaurants, bars and shops, and I relaxed instantly. London is wonderful, no matter how many times you've been there (just be extra-cautious going out on your own after dark!!).

I watched a bit of TV when I got back to the hotel room, but it didn't take long for me to fall asleep. The bed was extremely comfortable and there was no noise at night. No complaints there.

FINAL BITS AND BOBS:

I didn't have breakfast at the hotel but I think you can buy it for £7. There are lots of cafes and restaurants in the area, however, if you'd prefer to go there.

Check-in time starts at 2pm and check-out time is 10:30am.

The room prices are all different, but I think they're fairly reasonable for the location. You can check the website for more details:

Overall, a very simple but perfectly formed hotel in the heart of London. It's not luxurious or romantic, but it's a comfortable, clean place to rest your head. Plus, it's close to everything and everywhere.

I liked it a lot!

Munich: Day Three

On the final morning of our stay in Munich, this cake came into our lives.

It is called a Rotwein Kuchen (red wine cake), fresh from the bakery of course, and I liked it because it looked as if it had been shot. It didn't taste as interesting as it looked, sadly, but I'm pleased to say that this is the only 'German' cake I've ever disliked. So I'll forgive it.

As we were short on time on this day we just went for a stroll around West Park before going to the airport and, ultimately, back to the sodding UK.

At the airport I had a shiatsu chair massage, but I think the chair was designed for a slightly larger person, as it started massaging my head and my bum... It didn't mention that on the poster. I also found some sleeping compartments!! I love these!!

One quite pleasant plane journey later we were back in the UK, which wasn't that bad, since we were greeted by this sunset:

And then my sister was nothing more than a little face on a screen, which always makes me laugh for some reason!

That was my mini-break in Munich. I think I'd like to do this sort of thing more often. ;)
